Specifically, we test the deviations from a linear summation of phase advances from two small perturbations. We derive analytically a correction term, which generally appears for oscillators whose intrinsic dimensionality is greater than one. We demonstrate this effect in case of the Stuart-Landau model, and also in various higher dimensional neuronal model. The non-linear correction is found to be proportional to the square of the perturbation. This deviation from the superposition principle needs to be taken into account in studies of networks of pulse-coupled oscillators. Further, this deviation could be used for verification of oscillator models via a dual pulse excitation.

Dynamics from a time series: can we extract the phase resetting curve from a time series?

Recordings of the membrane potential from a bursting neuron were used to reconstruct the phase curve for that neuron for a limited set of perturbations. These perturbations were inhibitory synaptic conductance pulses able to shift the membrane potential below the most hyperpolarized level attained in the free running mode. The extraction of the phase resetting curve from such a one-dimensional ...

Phase resetting in a model of sinoatrial nodal membrane: ionic and topological aspects.

We describe the phase-resetting effect of injecting an isolated current pulse in an ionic model of a single cell of the sinoatrial node. Delivery of a depolarizing pulse early (late) in the cycle results in a prolongation (abbreviation) of the cycle length. With a hyperpolarizing pulse, the effect is reversed. We determine the topological type or degree of phase resetting in two ways: 1) by ana...

Phase resetting properties of cardiac pacemaker cells

Aggregates of heart cells from chicken embryos beat spontaneously. We used intracellular microelectrodes to record the periodic behavior of the membrane potential that triggers the contractions. Every 5-12 beats, a short current pulse was applied at various points in the cycle to study the phase-dependent resetting of the rhythm. Pulses stronger than 2.5 nA caused the final rhythm to be reset t...

Phase Resetting in a Model of Cardiac

The phase-resetting response of a model of spontaneously active cardiac Purkinje fiber is investigated. The effect on the interbeat interval of injecting a 20-ms duration depolarizing current pulse is studied as a function of the phase in the cycle at which the pulse is delivered. At low current amplitudes, a triphasic response is recorded as the pulse is advanced through the cycle. At intermed...

Phase resetting Analysis of High potassium epileptiform Activity in CA3 Region of the rat Hippocampus

The theory of phase resetting can reveal important information about the dynamic behavior of a periodic system when a single brief stimulus is applied to that system at the appropriate time. Phase resetting studies have revealed the existence in some biological systems of a vulnerable stimulus window generating desynchronization and suppression of the activity. The objective of this study was t...
